Travel - Zone 1 (England, Scotland and Paris)

This zone covers England, Scotland and Paris.

Some of the places in England that I went to were London, Manchester (I studied there), Lake District, Huddersfield, and Bradford. I would like to brief you on London and Manchester.

Mum and AuntieBasically, London is a good place for hanging out and see some colonial buildings. Things to do and places to visit are endless. Well, for a start, dont miss out any of these: London Bridge, Madame Tussauds a.k.a. wax museum (picture with 'Lady Diana'), The London Dungeon, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Millennium Dome, Hyde Park, Kew Garden and Leicester Square. Shown below is a picture of me, mum, sis and my auntie with London Bridge in the background. They came to visit me on Easter of 99 (my dad couldnt make it). Here you can enjoy the view of the city from the bridge, which crosses the River Thames.

Manchester U A man once told me never to leave your home without an umbrella if youre in Manchester. The weather here is quite unpredictable (most of the time raining and windy). Despite of that Manchester is a happening city. If u are a football fan and happen to adore Manchester United club, you have the opportunity to visit their infamous Old Trafford stadium. Manchester is also well known for its universities. There are 4 of them, including one in Salford. The other 3 (including my univ.) are closely situated in the city centre.

For shopping, hop in to the Trafford Centre or Marks & Spencer. Both of them are the biggest in Europe and the world respectively. M&S store was opened in Nov?9, has 18 500 sq. metres of floor space on 4 floors, each the size of a football pitch. It was built after 3 ?years of 1996 IRA bombing. I used to work here for one month when it was first opened (one of the many odd jobs that I did in England). One other thing, most of the buildings are in red, which I found very unique actually.

I brought my mother to Scotland to enjoy the cold weather in the highlands. During winter season (December until April when theres plenty of snow), people would flock to Aviemore to play ski or just playing with the snow. There are also numerous castles around Scotland. Some of them are Edinburgh Castle, Urquhart Castle, and Loch Ness Castle. They are many idyllic lakes too like Loch Linnhe, Loch Ness and Loch Lomond. The waters are icy cold with breath-taking views of mountains surrounding them. Some other interesting places that I went were Glencoe, Fort William and Wallace Monument in Stirling (remember William Wallace from Braveheart?).

We move on to Paris. During my 2 years of staying in England, I went to Paris 3 times, one time with my housemates, the second time with my mum and lastly during my backpacking traveling. From what I experienced you need at least 2 days to cover major tourist spots in Paris and one day would be spending time in Disneyland (if u like that sort of thing). Rides that shouldn't be missed are like Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Phantom Manor, Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Paris is a metropolitan city. However while you are here, dont expect the French to respect your English skills coz usually they refuse to attend to you if u approach them in English (unless if you ask the Tourist Info). So, its a good advice to have a complete and easy-to-understand Tour Guide or maybe have someone whos familiar with the area to accompany you. While in Paris, what else can I suggest to you if not the Eiffel Tower. You can climb up to the top of the tower to view the marvelous city. If the weather is good, you can observe how well planned the city of Paris is. Other extraordinary places that you should not miss are La Grande Arche a.k.a. La Defence (impressive architecture), Arc de Triomphe, Musee du Louvre, Versailles Castle and the infamous Notre Dame. At Musee du Louvre, you can treat yourself to a number of drawings created by famous artists. One of them is the original portrait of Mona Lisa.
